about

Sakura Swing is the debut release of Tak Arikushi's Japanese Gypsy-jazz project. It's a reinterpretation of a timeless Japanese song, "Sakura Sakura", in the style of Django Reinhardt. The introspective melody and the red-hot swing rhythm fused to create a new direction in the Gypsy-jazz genre.

Sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossom, an important flower and symbol in Japanese culture. It represents ephemeral beauty, and is a reminder to us of the fragility and beauty of life.

The melody was originally conceived of as a study piece for the koto, a Japanese instrument that resembles a zither. The guitar invokes the koto in the introduction of this song, layering melodies that dance in counterpoint before breaking into the hot-jazz rhythms.
